how can i tell if a ring is actually made of gold or if its gold plated? does the gold plating turn the finger green or is that some other kind of metal that does that?

Gold ring never make a finger green. There are other metal which makes finger green because of sweating.
Regarding the originality I suggest you to physically examine by an expert.
